History

Wonshik doesn't remember much of anything, before he was sent off to Seoul to live with his father's wife. Vaguely, he recalls his father and mother acting like every inch the happily married couple, at least in his young eyes, and yet.... it was all a lie. Adjusting to a new city with his accent isn't easy, worse still is the way his step-mother sneers at him when she thinks he isn't paying attention.

But he's got his half-brother, at least, spoiled though the slightly younger man is. He doesn't see his father often anymore, and that's... fine. The nannies at his new home are nice, and he and his half-brother go to a good school where Wonshik is something of a class clown, his grades never as stellar as those of most of his classmates. But he's good with words and figuring out how someone is feeling without them saying anything, a knack for art and music that most of the teachers just sigh at.

By the time middle school rolls around, Wonshik is experimenting with his hair and with fashion choices, running off to PC rooms or noraebang on the weekends with friends when their father drags his brother to Busan for 'business.' They're still so young, he thinks, but he's never had a mind for that kind of thing, so all the better.

Wonshik catches his step-mother spewing hateful words about him on the phone sometimes, calling him a bastard and a pariah while praising his brother as a scion, the golden heir to the company's throne who would surely make better choices in his life than her husband had. His brother always frowns to hear it, shakes his head and drags Wonshik away to a room far away from the ranting of a drunk woman.

When high school comes, Wonshik- like all of his classmates save for his brother- starts to date and chase tail and... okay, maybe he's a bit crass about it sometimes. But he educates himself and does his best to be better, if only because he never wants to be someone that his brother is ashamed off. The dates instead turn to cram school when exams and testing roll around, because even if his father and step-mother refuse to pay for any further education he may want to do.

Instead, the brothers enlist fresh out of high school, and while their father's influence gains Wonshik's brother a cushy spot away from any chance of combat, he himself isn't quite so lucky. It's not awful by any means, given that he's stationed on the coast instead of near the DMZ, but it's always a worry that he'll be transferred there. When they're both done, he breathes a sigh of relief as they start to hatch a plan.

Using the money Wonshik had saved up- both from the military and working odd jobs here or there- he spends two years training to be a licensed barista. And making music, and partying, and gaining a plethora of tattoos and a few piercings and making more than his fair share of poor hairstyle choices. The time comes for him to actually begin his college career, and off to Korea University he goes.

His brother has already rushed for a fraternity and moved in, and Wonshik wants to spend as little time as he can in his step-mother's home, so he opts to do the same. Except that he's not welcome in the one his brother is in, not that he got along with any of the other members of the 'legacy' club. No, he finds a new home and brothers with Lambda Chi Alpha, where there's camaraderie and good nature to spare... even if the whole process of pledging is rough.

Before Wonshik settles on his major and minor, he and his brother meet to decorate the individual studio spaces that his brother has secured for them, and have a real heart-to-heart for the first time in two years. He learns some things about his brother that make him see the whole world in a different light, one that makes him want to be even more accepting than he already was. He wants to help, and they change their vision to align with their matured values.

Mental Health Counseling isn't easy, especially not at first, but Wonshik can use his innate ability to sense a person's mood and temper it with his experience dealing with varying personalities in both the military and his fraternity to put the odds in his favor. Culinary arts as a minor makes sense, if only so that he can perhaps bake his own pastries at the LGBTQ+ safe house/cafe that he and his brother will be opening after his brother graduates.

In the meantime, he works at the cafe on campus and serves as an assistant manager, along with participating in the music club, even if only for discussions that usually leave everyone with new artists to check out.
